While most female dress forms include only the neck down to the beginning of the thigh, some tailors might require the bottom portion to be extended in order to create a formfitting skirt. For that reason, some female dress forms also have a removable bottom cage which extends the length of the legs. Other mannequins are completely full-bodied.

Most of these form mannequins tend to extend the length from neck to crotch and rest on top of a rod or tripod. These rods can be adjusted in height to provide a better idea of how any article of clothing will look on a woman of a certain height. While most of the rods come with a round or rectangular base in order to keep the mannequin securely upright, rods on wheels are another option which is convenient for showrooms where mannequins are moved from room to room in order to show off a dress to many customers.
