Window displays can make or break a retail business. The right display will catch the attention of shoppers and pedestrians, coercing them into entering the store and browsing the presented products. But the wrong display will have little-to-no effect on shoppers, at which point they'll walk right by it without taking notice. So, how do you create an effective and engaging window display?

Start From Scratch

If you're having trouble creating an effective window display, it's usually best to start from scratch. This means removing any and all props, mannequins and other items, leaving you with a blank slate. Starting from scratch will give you more freedom over choosing the elements that you want to include in your display, and it will also prevent your display from becoming cluttered -- a serious problem with many retail displays.

Go Big

When it comes retail displays, size matters, which is why it's recommended that you make it big and bold. Remember, one of the primary purposes of a window display is to catch the attention of shoppers and pedestrians. Therefore, it should come as little-to-no surprise that large displays are generally more effective than small ones. Don't be afraid to expand your store's display so it's large, prominent and easy to see from afar. You'll find it has more of an impact on shoppers, boosting your sales as a result.

Support With Signage

Don't underestimate the impact signage has on your window displays. Sure, the focus of a typical retail window display is on a mannequin (which it should be), but including signs and banners enhance the appearance of your displays. I know what you're probably thinking: where in the world am I supposed to get signs from? In the event that you don't have any available at your store, contact some of your product manufacturers and distributors to see if they have any. Many product manufacturers will gladly ship you additional signs, simply because it's in their best interest to help you sell as many products as possible. More sales means more money for them.

Lighting

We've talked about this before on the MannequinMall.com blog, but it's worth mentioning again that lighting can and will influence the effectiveness of your window displays. Displays that are dimly lit will have little-to-no effect on shoppers, most of whom will walk right past them without taking notice. Illuminating your displays with adequate light, however, will encourage shoppers to take notice and check out the product.
